En muchas visitas guiadas, en el entorno del P.N. “Las Tablas de Daimiel”,

surgen multitud de dudas entre los visitantes, y una de las más frecuentes es:

¿Cuál es el depredador más importante del parque? Mi respuesta es siempre la misma, nunca busco en el suelo alzo la mirada para localizar la silueta de esta ave:

El aguilucho lagunero es un ave característica de las marismas, lagunas, charcas, tablas, etc. Donde encuentra la base de su comida y es el vértice de la compleja pirámide del humedal ayudando a mantener el necesario equilibrio ecológico de esta comunidad.

El aspecto fisiológico más característico de esta ave es su dimorfismo sexual, tanto en tamaño como en plumaje. Las hembras son mayores que los machos. Estas tienen un peso de alrededor de 667 gr y una envergadura alar que alcanza los 140cm, frente a su pareja con un

peso entorno a los 550 gr y una envergadura alar que puede alcanzar hasta los 125cm.

En las hembras los tonos son marrones oscuros excepto la cabeza (el píleo + garganta) y parte de los hombros de color crema y que con la edad se van haciendo más blancos; los machos, sin embargo, presentan color marrón en dorso y cobertoras alares, con plumas gris azuladas en la cola y rémiges en secundarias en color negro en el extremo de las primarias. Es decir, cuando la ves en vuelo aparece “sucio” por el pecho e inicio de las alas, pasando a blanco con las puntas negras.

Su alimentación es la clave de su éxito, la diversidad y su capacidad de adaptación durante las distintas épocas del año lo hace un superviviente nato; en verano: lagartos culebras, peces, insectos, huevos, pollos de rálidos y anátidas, ratas de agua, ratones y conejos. En invierno: pájaros pequeños, roedores aves de mayor tamaño que estén heridas y carroña. Esto último le hace muy resistente a periodos críticos de carencia de alimentos.

El nido, normalmente construido por la hembra con escasa ayuda del macho, suele ser una plataforma circular de entre 60 a 150 cm y con una altura de entre 20 a 50 cm por encima del agua. Suele poner entre 4 a 5 huevos,

normalmente con un periodo de incubación de 31 días. Durante esta época la hembra no abandona el nido, siendo el macho el que aporta la alimentación para la pareja. Los pollos no comienzan a volar hasta pasados los 35-40 días.

Estos datos como características generales, a nivel particular decir que en P.N. han nidificado entorno

entre 25 a 30 parejas, además observándose entre 80-110 individuos. Algunos inviernos se han llegado a observar más de 215 individuos en sus dormideros, lo que hace de esta zona uno de los puntos más importantes a nivel nacional de esta rapaz. (Datos PN)

Por  último,  hablar  de su conservación, indiscutiblemente ligado a su hábitat, el humedal. El  daño por la desecación de estos a mediados del siglo XX y la actual falta de aportes hídricos a estos  entornos hacen peligrar sus colonias, nuestro PN es un claro ejemplo.

La contaminación de las aguas por: pesticidas, abonos, metales pesados, especialmente el plomo, y finalmente la caza hacen que, a pesar de la buena salud que goza nuestro lagunero, no debemos relajarnos.
