La respiración es vital  para el correcto funcionamiento del cuerpo. No respirar correctamente por la nariz o respirar por la boca puede traer consecuencias , en ocasiones muy graves.

La respiración nasal nos mantiene saludables de muchas formas:

  • Defensa:  los cilios presentes en los  conductos nasales por dentro son la primera línea de defensa contra patógenos potenciales como virus, suciedad, bacterias, hongos o esporas. 
  • Prepara y acondicionar el aire:  las vías aéreas nasales calientan y humedecen el aire que respiramos, lo cual es mejor para nuestra salud respiratoria en general. 
  • Mejora la oxigenación:  al respirar por la nariz, los senos paranasales producen óxido nítrico, lo que facilita la circulación de oxígeno por todo el cuerpo, ayuda a los pulmones a absorber oxígeno, relaja los músculos y permite que los vasos sanguíneos se dilaten. El óxido nítrico también tiene propiedades antifúngicas, antivirales, antiparasitarias y antibacterianas, que fortalecen el sistema inmunitario y evitan las infecciones. 

Respirar por la boca hace que el aire inspirado sea un aire de mala categoría, provocando que el aporte real de oxígeno a nuestras células sea menor, desencadenando a medio largo plazo la aparición de diversas patologías.

Causas y soluciones para niños que respiran por la boca

La respiración bucal se relaciona con anomalías dentales, anomalías faciales, alteraciones de comportamiento e incluso disminución del crecimiento.

El dentista tiene un papel muy importante en el estudio de las vías aéreas y puede tratar precozmente estos problemas en niños y niñas.

¿Qué causa la respiración bucal?

Normalmente puede estar causada por una obstrucción que dificulta la respiración normal  por la nariz. Como pueden ser: infecciones respiratorias, vegetaciones o amígdalas demasiado grandes, rinitis alérgicas, , ojeras marcadas, cara alargada, respiración bucal, ronquidos

¿ Cómo veo si mi hijo o hija respira por la boca?

Con un cuestionario sencillo es fácil poder averiguar si nuestro hijo o hija son respiradores bucales, algunos datos para identificarlo pueden ser:

  • Le cuesta quedarse dormido.
  • Se despierta con frecuencia y/o tiene problemas para volver a dormir.
  • Ronca mientras duerme.
  • Duerme con la boca abierta
  • Sequedad bucal , mal haliento.
  • Moja la cama.
  • Tiene catarros frecuentes, alergias o sinusitis.
  • Hace ruido con los dientes mientras esta dormido.

¿Qué consecuencias puede tener no respirar correctamente?

Respirar mal se traduce en dormir mal, y esto trae graves consecuencias, sobre todo cuando hablamos de pacientes en crecimiento y desarrollo.

  • Problemas esqueléticos durante el crecimiento facial: al respirar por la boca se produce una alteración del desarrollo facial , provocando caras alargadas, presencia de ojeras, nariz estrecha. La respiración bucal se relaciona con mordida abierta, paladar estrecho y barbilla retraída.
  • Problemas dentales: al respirar por la boca el flujo de saliva disminuye, lo que provoca mayor sequedad, y esa falta de saliva propicia la aparición de caries, problemas en encías, desgaste dentario por erosión o por bruxismo, sensación de boca seca y mal aliento.
  • Alteraciones del sueño

  •  Ronquidos: al no poder respirar correctamente, el niño intenta adoptar posturas para mejorar el flujo de aire, esto lleva a que aparezcan los ronquido , dificultando que el niño tenga un sueño correcto  y reparador
  • Apnea del sueño: Ocurre cuando existen pausas respiratorias durante el sueño. Es decir, el niño deja de respirar durante unos segundos. La falta de oxígeno durante la noche provoca que no se consiga tener un sueño correcto y esa falta de sueño puede ser causante de múltiples problemas:
    • Alteración del desarrollo cognitivo, problemas de aprendizaje, de concentración..
    • Aumento de los niveles de cortisol causando mayor estrés y ansiedad, e incluso alterando el carácter, haciéndolo más agresivo.
    • Déficit de crecimiento.
    • Cansancio diurno
    • Eneuresis nocturna( mojan la cama)
    • Fatiga crónica
    • Bruxismo

        ¿ Que hago si mi hijo respira por la boca ?

No respirar bien es igual a no dormir bien y las consecuencias durante el crecimiento de los niños pueden llegar a ser graves. Pensar que todo va a mejorar con el crecimiento es ridículo, se debe realizar un diagnóstico precoz y un tratamiento correcto que puede involucrar varios profesionales:
