LA NAVIDAD QUE NOS UNE

Tres viejas películas,  que han resistido muy bien el paso del tiempo, nos pueden ayudar a aproximarnos al sentido de la Navidad.
Tú y yo,  película dirigida en  1957 por Leo McCarey, cuenta entre sus protagonistas con Gary Grant y Deborah Kerr. Un elegante playboy y una bella cantante de un club nocturno se conocen a bordo de un lujoso transatlántico y surge entre ellos un apasionado romance. Aunque ambos están comprometidos con sus parejas respectivas, establecen un pacto antes de abandonar el barco: encontrarse en el Empire  State  Building en un plazo de seis meses .
En  El  apartamento, que dirigió Billy Wilder en 1960, C.C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon) es un modesto pero ambicioso empleado de una compañía de seguros de Manhattan. Está soltero y vive solo en un discreto apartamento que presta ocasionalmente a sus superiores para sus citas amorosas. Con estos favores confía en mejorar su posición en la empresa. Pero la situación cambia cuando se enamora de una ascensorista (Shirley MacLaine) que resulta ser la amante de uno de los jefes que usan su apartamento.

En  El  bazar de las sorpresas (Ernst Lubitsch,  1940), Alfred Kralik (James  Stewart) es un tímido empleado de Matuschek y Compañía, una tienda de Budapest. Todas las mañanas, espera junto a sus compañeros la llegada de su jefe, Hugo Matuschek. A pesar de su timidez, Alfred responde al anuncio de un periódico y mantiene una relación por carta. Entretanto su jefe decide contratar a una tal Klara Novak  (Margaret Sullavan). En el trabajo, Alfred discute constantemente con ella, sin sospechar que es su corresponsal secreta.
Definir estas tres películas como comedias románticas no hace justicia a su contenido ni a su extraordinaria calidad. Para empezar se trata de tres obras maestras del cine,  más allá de su encasillamiento en un género determinado. Coinciden en narrar la historia de tres parejas en las que lo inesperado,  es decir, que lleguen a buen puerto sus relaciones,  se produce a pesar de todas las circunstancias en contra.
Entre las diversas coincidencias que se pueden apreciar entre ellas,  quiero destacar el hecho curioso de que en los tres casos el encuentro final de los protagonistas se produce en el entorno de la Navidad. Esto podría juzgarse por un hecho anecdótico, si no fuera porque realmente el desarrollo de los guiones perdería sin este entorno gran parte del encanto. Los guionistas podrían haber utilizado otro tipo de ambientación para el desenlace de la obra. Sin embargo,  es la Navidad la que han juzgado más conveniente. ¿Qué tiene la Navidad para atraer la mirada de los guionistas?
Hay que tener en cuenta que en los tres casos el final feliz se ve muy lejano, muy improbable hasta el último momento.  En mi opinión, se recurre a la Navidad para hacer posible este final feliz. Es decir,  no se sabe explicar cómo pueden llegar a buen puerto estas relaciones imposibles. La Navidad nos invita a creer que estamos hechos para encontrarnos en el amor, a pesar de todas las adversidades.
