En estos días, se celebran las cruces de mayo, un ritual que tiene sus raíces allá por el año 327 D.C, y que según el rito romano que es el más usado por la iglesia católica en su liturgia, coincide con la Invención, (del latín Invenio “descubrir”) por parte de Santa Elena, madre del emperador Constantino, de la cruz en la que fue crucificado Jesucristo. Dice la historia, o más bien las historias, que Santa Elena partió a Tierra Santa en busca de la reliquia, pero lo que es cierto, es que ya contaba con ochenta años de edad algo muy avanzado para la época, y los viajes de entonces como a nadie se le escapa no eran en avión, por lo que eran muchas las jornadas de un viaje penoso y muy peligroso máxime para una señora de tan avanzada edad por más madre que fuera de un emperador. En un principio, la intención era encontrar el Santo Sepulcro y para ello, hizo demoler el templo de Venus que se hallaba edificado en el monte Calvario en Jerusalén, hasta que le llegaron noticias del hallazgo de la Vera Cruz. La cruz fue hallada junto con otras dos en una cisterna junto con los clavos de Cristo. Uno, está montado en la Corona férrea en Monza, el otro está en la catedral de Milán y el tercero en Roma. Bueno, ya tenemos a la emperatriz no con una, sino con tres cruces gracias a la información obtenida interrogando a los más sabios judíos del lugar que, le aseguraron que debajo del Gólgota o monte de la calavera (que, en realidad, era una antigua cantera y lugar donde colocaban el patíbulo con las cruces los romanos) podrían estar los restos que andaba buscando, y como ya comentamos anteriormente, mandó derruir el templo que Adriano había consagrado a Venus.

¿Cómo saber cuál de las tres cruces halladas era la Vera Cruz?, aquella en la que había sido crucificado Jesús. Pues cuenta la leyenda, que la emperatriz se hizo valer de una maniobra insólita de naturaleza religioso-forense. Mandó traer a un enfermo para que tocase las tres cruces: Al tocar la primera, el estado de salud del enfermo empeoró ostensiblemente, cuando lo hizo con la segunda, no hubo variación alguna en su estado, pero cuando tocó la tercera todos sus males (de los cuales desconocemos su etiología) desaparecieron, llegando a la conclusión los allí presentes, que esa y no otra, debería ser la cruz auténtica en la que Jesús fue crucificado.

Tan contentos estaban con el hallazgo madre e hijo (Santa Elena y Constantino) que mandaron construir allí mismo un fastuoso templo llamado Basílica del Santo Sepulcro en el que guardaron la reliquia por parecerles me imagino, más apropiado que llevársela a un museo en Constantinopla, pero, eran años de zozobra e incertidumbre y en el año 614 (trescientos casi de rumiar la venganza) el rey persa Cosroes II tomó Jerusalén. No teniendo cosa mejor que hacer, y para hacer constar su desprecio hacia la religión cristiana, se llevó la Vera Cruz a su palacio y la puso a los pies de su trono. Semejante afrenta, fue reparada quince años después en el 628 por el emperador de Bizancio que respondía al nombre de Heraclio (como el famoso fabricante de naipes) que derrotó al despojador, y ese mismo año, concretamente el 14 de septiembre la cruz regresó a Jerusalén llevada en procesión por el mismísimo emperador .Cuenta la leyenda, que al querer cargar con ella, en un primer intento no pudo pese a ser hombre fornido, y solo, cuando se despojó de sus ricas vestimentas en claro guiño a la pobreza y humildad de Cristo, pudo transportarla , quedando la fecha como de exaltación de la Santa Cruz, y no se debe confundir con la de la Invención por parte de Santa Elena del 3 de Mayo que nos ocupa.

En España e Hispanoamérica donde extendimos la costumbre, es práctica habitual llegadas estas fechas, y el significado primitivo se mantiene con las variaciones que el paso de los siglos ha impuesto. Y sea uno creyente o no, es una costumbre que debemos preservar, no contra nadie, sino haciendo partícipes de ella a todo aquel que quiera sumarse.
