(Cuento de feria)

– ¿Por qué nunca te atreviste? – le  preguntó  antes de poner la máquina en función.
– Quizás por el miedo a no saber qué pasaría. –  contestó Isabel con la mano posada sobre el hombro de su nieto.
Tras el cristal del puesto, el viejo vendedor la miraba con ojos caídos intentado retener su entusiasmo. Con la  maestría de una vida entera daba vueltas al palillo   de manera infinita para logar la bola de algodón perfecta. La luz amarilla de la decoración  caía sobre los tres en el rincón de siempre, mientras la gente paseaba en múltiples direcciones absorbida por el primer día de feria.
– Quitaron el banco, fui a verlo esta mañana. En su lugar han puesto unos rosales.
Isabel no contestó, sus mejillas enrojecieron y con un gesto pausado puso al niño delante, bajo su pecho.
– Hubiese sido una locura David, eran otros tiempos – dijo ella moviendo ligeramente la cabeza.
–  Mi año comenzaba el treinta de Agosto y terminaba el  seis de Septiembre. He viajado por un millón de pueblos buscando otra  Isabel. Nunca la encontré.
El júbilo de la noche no alteraba una conversación lenta de dos personas mayores frente a una nube de algodón finalizada. Solo el niño miraba incrédulo como su abuela no terminaba por despachar a aquel anciano canoso de sonrisa triste.
– ¿Y ahora? – preguntó David.
– Son años de luto y vejez. Ahora me debo a mis hijos y mis nietos, soy una cepa vieja enraizada en el pueblo.
– ¿Y el juramento de la tercera vez? – reprocho él.
– La feria  nos aceleraba un corazón joven, tú eras un chico de pelo rizado que traía mundo en sus ojos marrones. Yo una muchacha ilusionada que cinco días al año vivía el amor en un  banco de madera.
– Lloré  tanto aquel año.
– Fue un buen marido. – dijo ella acariciándose la alianza. Nos cuidamos hasta el final y me dio una familia preciosa.

Una pareja que empujaba un carrito perseguía desesperada a una niña con coletas  que chocó contra las piernas de Isabel. El padre pidió turno y disculpas  y esperó abrazado su  mujer que sonreía con el trajín de la gente en el pasillo central,  donde las tómbolas gritaban al aire y los jóvenes corrían entre escopetillas de plomo y puestos de comida rápida. David extendió el palillo con la bola  de algodón y la mano de Isabel rozó su piel. Como dos duelistas no apartaron su choque de miradas y él intentó detener el tiempo entre sus cálidos dedos que sujetaban una moneda.
– A esta invito yo, no me debes nada. – le susurró David sosteniendo su dedo índice. Tal vez el próximo uno de septiembre.
–  Nada hay antes y todo se apagará después. Hasta que las luces te traigan. – dijo Isabel como recitando de memoria.
El vendedor alargó su brazo para darle al niño la bola de algodón de azúcar, mientras el padre empujado por las coletas inquietas de su hija comenzó a pedir delante de Isabel. El torbellino de gente pronto engulló  a la abuela y a su nieto que corría embelesado hacía el Dragón que bajaba la cuesta  de railes envuelto en colores. Al lado, los coches de choque comenzaban a tejer nuevas historias de amor frente a un parque que un día tuvo bancos de madera y ahora vestía rojos y espinosos rosales.
