Nunca me gustaron los cabezudos. Solía agarrar la mano de mis padres frente al balcón del Ayuntamiento y mirar de reojo a mi hermano (que mucho más valiente que yo) observaba con entusiasmo el desfile. Cuando sus estiradas figuras de palo asomaban por el Casino de la Armonía con esas zancadas oscilantes mis piernas comenzaban a temblar. No soportaba ver aquellas miradas fijas sobre unos cuellos anchos observando con rigidez al personal agolpado en las aceras. La sonrisa permanente que paseaban a medias entre felicidad y sorpresa hacía que terminase por taparme los ojos y esconder mi cara entre las caderas de mi madre. Ni siquiera la marabunta de fiesta y color desinflaba el miedo ante aquellos tipos que rozaban las nubes y que a su vez se rodeaban de otros más bajitos que corrían en círculos. Como personajes fantásticos propios de los cuentos infantiles aterrizaban una vez al año con sus manos pequeñas y blandas que agitaban al ritmo de la música, y cuando giraban sobre sí mismos, daba la impresión de que podían salir volando en cualquier momento.


Hace unos días buscando un libro de texto entre cajones de instituto encontré unas viejas revistas que aguantaban el paso de los años camufladas entre un álbum de cromos del mundial de USA 94 y una colección inacabada de dinosaurios. Pertenecían a ese tipo de cosas que escondes de la vista para que vaya adquiriendo valor con el tiempo. Entre ellas figuraba una que captó mi atención por su barroquismo y fantasía. Me tiré al sofá con un café para ojearla y poder descifrar los sentimientos que (quizás) en aquel septiembre de 1992 inundaban la cabeza de un niño. El pueblo, que para entonces era todo el mundo, se iluminaba de color y se mezclaba con toda una serie de artificios que pasada una semana se desvanecía como un truco perfecto de magia. Las brujas que salían del escudo bañaban de fuegos artificiales y atracciones un recinto ferial del que apenas se atisbaba rastro del cemento y la tierra. Era como si en ese vuelo nocturno de escoba hubieran creado un nuevo universo, unas calles donde las casas se habían cambiado por canguros gigantes y montañas con forma de V. Enormes tiendas de lona de diferentes dibujos acogían invitados a la cena y gentes venidas de otros puntos del mapa ofrecían utensilios variopintos o incluso los sorteaban en papeles numerados. El algodón de azúcar se mezclaba con los claxon de coches diminutos que escalaban incansablemente una cuesta donde el sol era un globo de color rosa al que todos pretendían tocar. Un barco pirata era capaz de atravesar el aire con tripulantes agarrados a sus calabozos mientras que a su lado corría un dragón con el lomo repleto de niños. Al igual que en el cartel de la portada, las calles del pueblo oscurecían como si de manera cortés se apartasen para no robar protagonismo.
Pero antes de subir a la ciudad de las luces tocaba sufrir el desfile. Ni siquiera agarrar con fuerza al muñeco de pressing catch “Hulk Hogan” que me habían feriado aquel año contrarrestaba el miedo. Los cabezudos se acercaban inevitablemente hacia nuestra posición y a pesar de seguir con los ojos cerrados el ruido de los tambores me hizo llorar. Fue tal el berrinche y la perdida de noción del tiempo y el espacio que cuando por unos instantes los abrí encontré un rostro amable bajo una tela de rejilla. Me calmó, sus escuetas palabras fueron: “Tranquilo, todo es magia en estos días” y después, unos labios que parecían de mujer soltaron un beso que sin duda traspasó las pequeñas rejas de la tela. Aun sentía como los lagrimones bajaban hasta la barbilla cuando ella al despegarse de mí, se alzó con vigor desvaneciendo su rostro en un pecho negro bajo esa cara sonriente y rígida del cabezudo. Una vez retomó el ritmo de la danza al compás de la música de la banda municipal dejé de llorar.
