LA FESTIVIDAD DE LOS MAYOS

ORÍGENES
Sería necesario remontarse al Neolítico para datar el origen de las celebraciones relacionadas con la primavera y la fertilidad. La génesis de los Mayos puede situarse en tiempos remotos, puesto que hallaremos pocas culturas primitivas que no iniciasen, al principio de la primavera, algún tipo de celebración dando gracias a los dioses por la renovación de la tierra y la Naturaleza. Así sucede en las culturas próximo-orientales, clásicas y célticas, que constituyen la base del mundo Occidental.
El origen nombre del mes de mayo procede de su vinculación en Roma a la Bona Dea, Maía o Maya, diosa que personificaba el crecimiento de los seres y el desarrollo de los vegetales. Los romanos celebraban esta fiesta desde el 28 de abril hasta el 3 de mayo. En la Península Ibérica, se encuentran referencia a los Mayos en una cantiga de Alfonso X. La más alusión más antigua a la fiesta de mayo la encontramos en un penitencial español datado entre los siglos IX y X. Además, varios son los autores que nos hablan de la fiesta de los mayos: Lope de Vega, Pedro Echevarría Bravo, Caro Baroja, etc.
Pero, ¿qué son los Mayos? Se trata de canciones típicas de la Mancha, composiciones amorosas de origen profano, y que después se les dio un carácter más moralizador. De este modo, el culto pagano se transformaría en un culto Mariano, trasponiéndose el mes de Maya al mes de la Virgen María.
Si se tiene en cuenta la música, la letra y las distintas tonalidades de la canción, tal vez se pueda rastrear alguna reminiscencia árabe de origen campesino. Son romances líricos, que provienen de unas cancioncillas en lengua mozárabe denominadas jarchas. Estas aparecen al final de otros poemas árabes llamados muwasahas. Estos poemas no se recogieron en canciones, sino en poemas sueltos como fueron los cantos de primavera, los mayos o mayas.
El canto de los mayos, es una costumbre muy arraigada en la inmensa mayoría de los pueblos de la provincia de Ciudad Real como Alcázar de San Juan, Almodóvar del Campo, Campo de Criptana, Daimiel, Herencia, Pedro Muñoz, etc. Así como en otros muchos puntos de la geografía castellanomanchega.

 LAS CRUCES DE MAYOS
La Cruz era el patíbulo utilizado en la Roma antigua como medio de ejecución para ciertas penas. La muerte de Jesucristo bajo esta forma convirtió a la cruz en signo de su sacrificio y su redención y el distintivo de los cristianos.
Tras la publicación del Edicto de Milán, en el año 313 d.C. por parte del emperador Constantino, en el que se aprobaba la práctica del cristianismo, 13 año después, su madre Elena descubrió en las ruinas de Jerusalén la Cruz en la que Cristo había sido crucificado. A raíz de esto, personas de toda la Cristiandad, comienzan a peregrinar a los Santos Lugares para adorarla. Ante estos hechos, la Iglesia venerará el día 3 de mayo el hallazgo de la Santa Cruz en el monte Calvario.
A pesar de la distancia que separa las muchas localidades en las que se celebra la fiesta de los Mayos, la mayoría conservan elementos comunes, entre los que destacan los motivos por los que se ponen: promesa, devoción o simplemente por el hecho festivo; la fecha de celebración de la fiesta, 3 de mayo, aunque se prolongan durante todo el mes; o “echarle” el mayo a la Cruz, práctica habitual en la mayoría de los pueblos.
El montaje de las cruces varía de unas localidades a otras. En la mayoría se construyen pequeños altares, vestidos con ropa de hogar, coronados por una cruz o el crucifijo, con estampas de devociones a la Virgen María, a Jesús y a los Santos.
 
ASOCIACIÓN FOLKLÓRICA VIRGEN DE LAS CRUCES
Desde hace ya casi 30 años, la Asociación Folklórica Virgen de las Cruces viene llevando a escena la recuperación de esta tradición que perdió relevancia, tras verse eclipsada por otras festividades más modernas.
Con el Certamen de Cruces de Mayo que cumple ya su XXIX Edición, y en el que puede inscribirse cualquier particular, asociación, colegio, o cualquier otra entidad, las calles y casas de Daimiel se engalanan para adornar con cruces, flores y folklore el mes de mayo. Durante los fines de semana, el grupo y rondalla titular, acompañados por los alumnos de la Escuela Municipal de Folklore, recorren las cruces inscritas en el certamen, cantando y rondando las canciones propias de las fechas con un amplio repertorio de rondas y mayos.
Por otro lado, el mes culmina con el Festival de Mayos que también organiza la asociación, en el que también participan los alumnos de la Escuela Local de Folklore que suben al escenario para interpretar las canciones que a lo largo de todo el curso aprenden, además de uno o dos grupos invitados, de toda la comunidad, que aportan riqueza, valor y contendido a una fecha que durante todo el año se prepara con ganas e ilusión.
Este año, 2017, la Asociación Folklórica Virgen de las Cruces, compartirá tablas con la ya mencionada Escuela Local del Folklore, en la que más de doce niños, numerosas bailarinas, músicos y cantantes, todos alumnos de los cursos que se imparten a lo largo del año, debutarán con canciones como la Rondeña de Puertollano, el Fandango de Herencia o la típica Mancha, Manchega.
Como grupo invitado, la Asociación Folklórica El Bombo, llegada directamente desde Tomelloso, traerá hasta Daimiel sus piezas más características. La Asociación Folklórica “El Bombo”, nace gracias a gente aficionada a los bailes típicos de nuestra tierra y con ganas, ilusión y trabajo tienen la intención de que estas tradiciones folklóricas perduren en el tiempo. El grupo surge a principios de febrero del año 2016, con miembros que contaban con experiencia en el baile y con otra gente con ánimo de aprender. Formaron en poco tiempo una familia con el nexo de unión de la afición a los bailes tradicionales manchegos. En el grupo existe gente con diferentes edades, pero con muchas ganas de bailar y disfrutar (y hacer disfrutar).
Por su parte, Virgen de las Cruces demostrará un año más que su repertorio mayero sigue creciendo año tras año, estrenando una nueva pieza aprendida del grupo albaceteño, invitado en 2016. En cuanto a sus bailes, fandangos, rondeñas, jotas y seguidillas pondrán una guinda al pastel que se cerrará en la ermita de San Roque, donde cada año se cierran las rondas cantando a la cruz allí instalada, con la colaboración de toda la barriada en dar unas viandas a los grupos locales y visitantes.
El sábado, 20 de mayo, a partir de las 21:00 horas, el Teatro Ayala se engalanará con sus mejores prendas de flores y telas de color para ser testigo del XXIX Festival de Mayos.
